What is Outreach?

It is increasingly accepted that the next generation will face global environmental and social challenges that outweigh those seen by their parents or grandparents.

In response to this, EWB-UK had developed an Outreach programme that consists of a series of interactive workshops, carried out by enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers in schools and youth groups, designed to inform and inspire young people about global development issues. Through presentations that focus on some of the biggest human development issues, and fun activities designed to explore them, and inspire thought and discussion, the programme raises awareness and understanding of the problems, and how these young people can be a part of the solution.

Currently there are five main Outreach modules:

  • Water for the World investigates how this precious resource gets from source to us, and how the situation differs around the world;
  • Shelter for the World investigates what defines adequate shelter and how engineers are working to improve the current slum crisis;
  • Going the Distance investigates how crucial transport infrastructure is to climbing out of poverty;
  • The Solar Car Workshop investigates the potential for utilising solar energy in the developing world; and
  • Food for Thought investigates the myths surrounding food production and hunger.
